I teach a form of yoga influenced by various schools of the Hatha tradition, enriched by many wonderful teachers, and flavoured by my background in Contemporary Dance. A Vinyasa style in the sense that the body is placed with mindful presence, and that linking movement to breath is a key element of my classes. As the quality of our breath reflects our state of mind, I believe that we can in turn affect our state of mind by noticing, shaping and directing the breath.
In my classes I aim to help students find a sense of centering and grounding, as well as expand their movement range and vocabulary. As well as familiar yoga asanas (postures) I usually include more intuitive movement patterns based on somatic movement exploration.
The flow is generally slow and steady, yet demanding. Healthy alignment is paramount in any class I teach, as the physical body becomes a gateway to turning inwards.
I would like students to discover that in essence yoga is a journey back to more balance and wholeness, not only within the physical body but - crucially - within the mind and the heart too.
I am hoping that my classes will support students in this discovery, that the practice will equip them with tools for dealing with challenging situations on and importantly beyond the mat, and that it may empower them to live every day fully awake.
Classes are Open Level unless otherwise stated, and are generally aimed at students with some previous experience of yoga or Pilates. However, keen beginners are very welcome as are students with an established practice. Emphasis is placed on working just within your own comfortable edge at all times, with options, modifications and guidance offered.
